This international shipping port has been blocked and its operation has stopped!
Hundreds of striking Belgian farmers are reported to have blocked roads around the port of Antwerp, demanding government authorities improve the welfare and working conditions of their farmers. Authorities say roads and tunnels leading to the port have been blocked by about 500 tractors.
Farmers demonstrated because they felt disadvantaged by dissatisfaction with government agricultural policies, falling incomes and, most importantly, European environmental standards. They demanded looser environmental regulations and better protection against flooding the market with cheap imports.
"Port operations have been severely disrupted," said Stephan Van Fraechem, head of the Alfaport VOKA Association of Port Operators. "In cases where farmers are driving tractors to block roads, trucks have been out of service, so goods cannot be transported or picked up, while employees are only allowed in after a long wait."
Companies working at the port are said to have lost millions of euros as the protests continue, even though they were not involved in the conflict. The protests still exacerbate the plight of port operators.
A spokesman for the port said,"Many roads have been blocked and traffic has been interrupted. The supply chain has been interrupted, and ships that have now exceeded the normal schedule cannot unload after arriving at the port. This is a matter of great concern."
