International shipping company ONE lost $248 million in the third quarter

It is reported that Ocean Network Express (ONE), a Japanese sea carrier, reported an operating loss of US $248 million in the last three months of 2023, due to the drop in freight and the surge in delivery of newly built ships.

The airline is expected to turn a profit in the first quarter of 2024, following a sharp rise in freight rates caused by the Red Sea crisis, despite traffic of 3.1 million TEUs, up 17 percent year-on-year.

However, ONE's third-quarter revenue plunged 46% from a year earlier to $3.4 billion, with a pre-tax profit loss of $248 million and a net loss loss of $83 million.

ONE said that domestic consumption in North America is still strong, personal consumption is stagnant due to long-term inflation in Europe, and the uncertainty of the situation in the Middle East is increasing, so freight transportation has not yet fully recovered. "

According to Alphaliner's latest data, ONE has a fleet of 234 vessels with a capacity of 1.8 million TEUs. Among them, the last three of the six long-term charter 24,000 TEUs ships received this quarter are deployed between Northern Europe, Asia and Southeast Asia. It also has orders for 543,000 TEUs, including contracts for 12 13,000 TEUs methanol dual-fuel ships.
