Flexport, an American international freight forwarder, laid off employees!
U.S. freight forwarder Flexport plans to cut 20% of its workforce in the coming weeks, affecting about 500 people, according to the Wall Street Journal. This is the company's second round of mass layoffs in months, after Flexport laid off one-fifth of its workforce in October.
Petersen, founder of Flexport, explained in a report announcing the layoffs to employees that the layoffs are aimed at helping the company regain profitability and build a net cash reserve of $1 billion. He added that the layoffs will provide the company with greater flexibility to re-stabilize its business without raising consumer prices.
Despite the challenges, Petersen said at the end of 2023 that it expects the company to be profitable again in early 2025. This forecast provides hope for Flexport's future development, even though the company is experiencing mass layoffs and financial losses.
As a middleman, Flexport buys space on container ships from shipping companies and makes a profit by earning the difference between the shipping company's price tag and the customer's rate.
Over the past decade, Flexport has raised $2.3 billion in investments. Together with February's funding, the freight forwarding company is valued at $8 billion. Despite the challenges, Flexport is struggling to keep the business afloat and meet its profit targets with its strategic planning and fundraising capabilities.
