Over 200,000 boxes! Piraeus port cargo will be delayed for 20 days!
Goods arriving at the port of Piraeus will be delayed by up to 20 days due to the Red Sea situation, and more than 200,000 containers haven't reach the port, said Yannis Chatzitheodosiou, president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce of Merchants.
"As long as this crisis continues, ships will not be able to pass through the Red Sea. That means a delay of 10 to 20 days for goods to reach the port of Piraeus." He added that transportation costs per container are typically 1,800 euros, but have reached 6,500 euros due to the extra distance through alternative routes.
The diversion from Asia via the Cape of Good Hope has had a particularly severe impact on Mediterranean ports, extending the voyage by about two weeks.
"As long as the war continues, in addition to the inconvenience and increased costs, there will be shortages because the demand for ships is great and the supply is dwindling," he warned.
"We mainly import electrical appliances, mobile phones and clothing from the Far East. We have stock for 15-20 days, but if this continues for more than a month, then there will be a shortage, and any products that come will be much more expensive, so we also expect this to affect all sectors and inflation."
