Many ports in Australia went on strike, with a backlog of 45,000 boxes
Work on docks operated by DP World at Australia's four largest ports is reported to have stalled, and the controversy is expected to escalate further in the coming weeks.
The Australian Maritime Union (MUA), which has not signed a contract since October 2023, received new strike rights from Australia's labor regulator after three days of talks broke down, with shippers and carriers calling for government intervention. The dispute has intensified after 10 months of negotiations and nearly four months without a contract.
DP World operates terminals in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Fremantle, which together handle about 40 percent of Australia's freight traffic. The company competes with Patrick, another large terminal operator in the country.
The strike comes after all dockworkers at Sydney, Brisbane and Fremantle docks went on strike, while only a small number of workers at Melbourne docks went on strike. According to DP World, the strike has cost a $1.34 billion since it began in October and caused a backlog of about 45,000 containers, causing huge losses.
Frustrated by months of delays and the prospect of a worsening situation, Australian shipping lines, which represent shipowners, operators and agents, have called on the federal government's Labor Relations Minister Tony Burke to step in and use his legal powers to resolve the dispute.
