China officially speaks on the Red Sea issue
Yemeni local time on January 12,13, the United States launched a two-day attack on Houthi armed forces. In response, Houthi armed forces said they would retaliate violently.
On January 14,2024, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, met with reporters after meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Shukri in Cairo, saying that China is deeply concerned about the recent sharp warming of the situation in the Red Sea.
Wang Yi said that the Red Sea is an important channel for international trade in goods and energy. China calls for an end to attacks on civilian ships, and for the smooth flow of global production and supply chains and the international trade order. At the same time, we believe that the Security Council has never authorized any country to use force against Yemen, so we should avoid adding fuel to the tension in the Red Sea and pushing up the overall security risks in the region.
It must be emphasized that the tense situation in the Red Sea is a prominent manifestation of the spillover of the conflict in Gaza. The most urgent task is to quell the war in Gaza as soon as possible to prevent the conflict from further expanding or even getting out of control. It is necessary for all parties to jointly safeguard the safety of the Red Sea waters and waterways in accordance with the law, while earnestly respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Red Sea coastal countries including Yemen.
At present, the situation in the Red Sea is now in a mess, and the shipping industry needs to reassess the security situation in the Red Sea routes.
