Strike, backlog! Maersk suspended several terminal operations in Australia

On January 4th, DP World Australia received the notice of additional protective industrial action issued by CFMMEU (Australian Maritime Union Department) against each wharf in Brisbane Port, Sydney Port, Melbourne Port and Fremantle Port, and the strike action will last until January 15th,2024.

Maersk said that it will suspend its business in Brisbane Port, Sydney Port and Melbourne Port for a certain period of time, but it will not be affected by the strike in Fremantle Port for the time being.

Australian unions have been involved in the strike action since October, carrying out work stoppages and a 24-hour strike to fight for an 8 percent annual pay rise. The strike action has caused a backlog of about 45,000 containers and caused huge losses.

It is reported that these shutdowns mean that ships importing various commodities such as household appliances and medicines and exporting local products such as red meat and fresh fruits will face delays of 10 to 12 days when shipping their products overseas.

Brian Hack, managing director of freight forwarding company EES Shipping, said that if the strike does not end soon, Australia's economic and reputation losses will only continue to worsen.

Hack added:"This is no longer just a matter for DP World and the Australian Maritime Alliance, Australian businesses are being significantly impacted and are suffering from continued delays and uncertainty."
