Plummeting 82%! Breakthrough $10,000 per box! Global capacity is facing a major reshuff

According to Clarkson's research statistics, the volume of cargo passing through Suez Canal accounts for about 10% of the total global seaborne trade every year. Up to now, there are more than 24,000 ships passing through Suez Canal. Among them,12,615 ships pass in the north direction (Asia to Europe), accounting for 51%, and the proportion of ships passing in the north-south direction is basically balanced.

Data show the impact of uncertainty in the Red Sea is already evident: the number of container ships entering the region on December 17 was seven. Compared with the first half of this month, the gross tonnage of container ships arriving in the Red Sea has plummeted by 82%.

In the Asia-Europe route via the Red Sea and Suez Canal, container shipping capacity is highly concentrated. Among them, the top 11 shipping companies control about 95% of the capacity. Therefore, the adjustment of shipping routes by shipping companies will affect the capacity of the global shipping supply chain.

Due to the continuing impact of the Red Sea situation, many shipping companies have chosen to bypass the Cape of Good Hope, and the change of ship navigation route has caused confusion in route capacity and shipping schedule, as well as soaring freight rates. According to CNBC, the sea freight rate from Shanghai to Britain is as high as $10,000 for a 40-foot container.

The total capacity affected by the incident is estimated to be 4.2 million TEUs as of December 22, according to data released by Dexun. The value of cargo affected by the ship's diversion is estimated at about $105 billion, according to MDS Transmodal, a maritime transport data company.
