Kuehne + Nagel: The rising trend of freight rate will continue until the end of January!

Recently, the world's largest maritime freight forwarder Kuehne + Nagel Group issued a customer announcement shows that the recent escalation of the situation in the Red Sea/Suez Canal is expected to continue to have a significant impact on global shipping.

With the implementation of shipping companies' coping plans and strategies, the potential impacts include: the delay of delivery time, the extra cost brought by bypass pushing up freight, the increase of fuel consumption and related costs, the decrease of available capacity triggering the increase of freight rate, the adjustment of routes aggravating the interruption of port and terminal operations, the prolonged voyage time disrupting the allocation of empty containers, resulting in the shortage of containers at the starting port, the disorder of shipping schedule and the forced diversion of ships, etc.

The announcement also pointed out that unless escort solutions are adopted, shipping companies may eventually be forced to divert ships on all affected routes around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa, which will consume at least 2.5 million TEUs of capacity, or about 9% of the global container fleet, resulting in a shortage of available capacity worldwide.

Affected by the turbulent situation in the Red Sea, the available capacity will be further reduced in the short term, and the short-term freight rate will continue to rise in the next few weeks, and this trend is expected to last until the end of January.
