Air cargo demand in Asia-Pacific region decreased by 7%

According to the Asia-Pacific Aviation Association (AAPA), the Asia-Pacific air cargo business continued to be affected by "weak demand driven by weak business confidence" in May.

Preliminary air cargo volume data for May showed demand for air cargo in May fell 7 percent year-on-year in terms of cargo ton-kilometres (FTK). Capacity provided rose 6 percent, resulting in an 8.5 percentage point drop in the average international cargo passenger load factor for the month to 60.1 percent.

"Air cargo demand remains weak, reflecting a generally weak global economic situation and a slowdown in manufacturing in particular," said AAPA Director General Subhas Menon. Looking ahead, he added:"Trade tensions are likely to weigh on the cargo market for some time to come, while air travel demand is expected to show resilience despite adverse external conditions."
