Drop sharply! Panama Canal transit data released in November

According to Panama Canal Authority (ACP) data, the total number of crossings in November was down 22 percent from October. Throughput through Neopanamax Lock was down 28 percent compared to October, while throughput through Panamax Lock was down 19 percent.

In November, the new Panama locks had an average of 7.37 crossings a day, down 25% from 9.83 a day in November last year.

In contrast, the year-on-year decline at Panama locks began as early as May. Between May and October, the average daily traffic through Panama locks decreased by 11% compared with the same period last year.

In that regard, November marked a major recession. Last month, Panama-type locks averaged 18.74 crossings per day, down 29% from November 2022.

Ship operators appear to have learned their lesson. Instead of going to the Panama Canal without a reservation, they are opting for alternative routes that avoid risk and reduce queues and waiting times.
