Asia-Europe freight continues to rise! Affected by Christmas shipping season?
According to Linerlytica's latest report, released Dec. 12, freight rates in Asia and Europe are likely to continue to rise throughout December as shippers drive out goods before Christmas.
On December 8, the Shanghai Container Freight Index showed that Asia-Nordic freight rose 9% to $925/TEU, while Asia-Mediterranean freight rose 10% to $1,387/TEU, rising for the second consecutive week.
Meanwhile, the return voyage of the Asia-Europe route and the rerouting of the Panama Canal are mitigating the impact of this year's record 2.2 million TEUs of new ship deliveries.
The Asia-US East Coast route edged down $5 to $2,441/FEU, while the Asia-US West Coast route rose just $23 to $1,669/FEU, although transit quotas through the Panama Canal have forced some Asia-US East Coast routes to divert to Suez or bypass the Cape of Good Hope.
Linerlytica said:"Alliance shipping lines are paying a heavy price due to the failure to get priority access and are being forced to divert services to avoid long delays on the canal. Although the draft limits the full container throughput of the Panama passage, the capacity on the east coast is still enough to meet market demand.
