Focus on logistics newsletter-Logistics crisis occurs in South Africa!

Hundreds of ships are congested,100,000 containers are stranded, and logistics crisis occurs in South Africa!

According to the latest statistics, as of November 30th, the number of containers stranded in the anchorages of Durban and Cape Town and waiting to berth in the open sea due to delay has far exceeded the number of 100,000 containers, and the cumulative number of container ships blocked has exceeded 100!

Recently, the South African Freight Forwarders Association (SAAFF) released an open letter entitled "Addressing Our National Logistics Crisis: A Message from SAAFF"!  In the open letter, the association stressed:"The logistics bottleneck (congestion) of our port has reached a critical point! This is a National Logistics Crisis.

SAAFF also pointed out that Transnet, the operator of ports and railways, is one of the main causes of port congestion.

Transnet is actively seeking solutions to this critical situation, and has planned to increase the container handling capacity of Terminal 2 from 2,500 containers/day to 4,000 containers/day in the next three months. Similarly, the handling capacity of Terminal 1 is also planned to increase from 1,200 containers per day to 1,500 containers per day.

In addition, Transnet also announced a moratorium on cargo handling for trucks entering its Richard Bay port. Only trucks destined for designated vessels will be processed and cleared, as more than 100,000 trucks have gathered near South African ports due to the backlog.

At present, South African ports are trying to solve the serious congestion problem in Durban Port, but it is expected that the backlog of ships may not be cleared until February next year.

近日,南非货运代理协会(SAAFF)发布题为《Addressing Our National Logistics Crisis:A Message from SAAFF》的公开信!
