22 container ships line up! Multi-shipping companies began to levy surcharges
According to foreign media, as the Panama Canal took measures to cope with the low water level, the daily transit volume decreased, the number of ships queuing increased, and the congestion began to increase. As of November 26th, there were 22 container ships waiting at the anchorage of Panama Canal, which is the highest record so far.
Earlier this month, a liquefied petroleum gas carrier paid a huge "queue-jumping fee" of $3.975 million to win the priority right of way on the 15th. At present, the Panama Canal has attracted about $235 million through auction.
Some shipping brokers predict that the next auction will also include the full container ships being numbered, and the "queue-cutting price" of Panama Canal may set a new record.
As the Panama Canal Authority confirmed that further restrictions on the number of ships and the increase in canal freight rates have a direct impact on the overall operating costs of shipping companies, COSCO, HPL, CMA, MSC and other shipping companies have issued relevant notices on levying Panama Canal surcharges.
These measures will further increase transportation costs and push up freight rates.
