MSC will charge Panama Canal Surcharge!

Mediterranean Shipping (MSC) recently announced that it will charge Panama Canal surcharge to ease the operating pressure.

MSC said that in order to cope with the increasingly serious capacity reduction of Panama Canal, a surcharge of US $297/TEU will be charged for goods passing through Panama Canal, which will be implemented from December 15,2023.

While the Panama Canal Authority has taken some water-saving measures in the past few months, the ACP recently confirmed that it will further limit the number of ships passing through the canal due to insufficient precipitation continuing to affect the water level of the canal. "These restrictions and previously raised canal tolls have a direct impact on the overall operating costs of MSC."

The ACP said it would continue to reduce the number of daily ships passing while keeping ships at a low draft, and these measures will last until the end of September 2024.

The specific adjustment method is step-by-step downward adjustment: from November 3, the number of passing ships will be reduced to 25 ships per day; From January 7, it will be 24 ships; From December 1ST, it will be 22 ships; From January 1,2024, it will be 20 ships; From February 1,2024, it will be 18 ships.
