EVA Shipping's decision to charge customers carbon dioxide quota fees from January 1 next year seems set to become the first container shipping line to make clear how much customers will have to pay under the EU ETS, which will be implemented in 2024.


At present, only container carriers such as Maersk and CMA CGM have provided relevant information. Take the Far East-Nordic route as an example, the surcharge per unit of TEU is between 10 and 30 US dollars.


Once the EU ETS takes effect on January 1,2024, EVA, for example, will charge 27 euros per container from Asia to Europe, according to Alphaliner. This is almost the same as CMA Flight's announcement that it will charge 25 euros per container for customers at the same distance. CMA Flight previously said the final rate would be announced in mid-November.


In the transportation of general cargo ships, the loading and unloading technology of containers is quite different from that of container carriers, and the scale effect is far less than that of special container carriers, so containers can only be regarded as a special general cargo. Therefore, ETS surcharge is quite different from that of container carriers.


Based on current market information, the vast majority of Container Lines will choose to shift the cost of EU emission quotas (EUA) downstream of the supply chain in the form of EU ETS surcharges. As Alphaliner points out, the pricing of ETS charges by shipping lines seems to vary widely, which may also be a competitive parameter.

       长荣海运决定从明年1月1日起向客户收取二氧化碳配额费用,似乎将成为第一家明确客户在即将于2024年开始实施的欧盟排放交易体系(EU ETS)下需要支付多少费用的集装箱航运公司。


       目前,只有马士基和达飞轮船等集运公司提供了相关信息。以远东-北欧航线为例,单位TEU的附加费大约在10-30美金之间。


       据Alphaliner的数据,一旦EU ETS于2024年1月1日生效,以长荣为例,该公司将对从亚洲到欧洲的每个集装箱收取27欧元的费用。这与达飞宣布的将对相同距离的客户收取每个集装箱25欧元的价格相差无几。达飞此前表示,最终收费标准将于11月中旬公布。


       在件杂货船的运输中,集装箱的装卸工艺与集装箱运输船差别较大,且规模效应远不及集装箱专用运输船,集装箱只能被视为一个特殊的件杂货。所以ETS附加费与集运公司的不同存在较大差别。


       据目前的市场信息,绝大多数集运公司都将选择以EU ETS附加费的形式将欧盟排放配额(EUA)的成本转移到供应链下游。正如Alphaliner所指出的,航运公司对ETS收费的定价似乎存在很大差异,这可能也是一种竞争参数。
