Weak demand and worsening freight rates! The shipping company lost $2.27 billion!

Recently, ZIM announced its third-quarter results. ZIM said that its third-quarter revenue was US $1.273 billion, down 61% year-on-year, and its net loss reached US $2.27 billion, compared with its net profit of US $1.166 billion in the third quarter of 2022. 

At the same time, ZIM's container volume increased slightly, and 867,000 TEUs were handled in the third quarter of 2023. However, the average freight rate per TEUs during this period was US $1,139, down 66% year-on-year. 

In the first nine months of 2023, the total revenue of Star Shipping was US $3.957 billion, while the total revenue in the first nine months of 2022 was US $10.373 billion, mainly due to the decrease in freight charges. 

In terms of profit, the net loss of Star Shipping in the first nine months of 2023 was US $2.541 billion, while the net profit in the first nine months of 2022 was US $4.212 billion.

Eli Glickman, president and CEO of ZIM, said:"ZIM's third quarter results reflect the current operating environment-transportation demand is still weak and freight rates continue to deteriorate. In view of the negative outlook on recent freight rates, ZIM lowered its full-year performance forecast. It is estimated that EBITDA will be 900 million to 1.1 billion US dollars in 2023, and EBIT will lose 400 million to 600 million US dollars."

       同时，ZIM的箱量略有增长，2023年第三季度处理了867000个标准箱。然而，该时期每个标准箱的平均运价为1139美元，同比下降66%。

       2023年前9个月，以星航运总营收为39.57亿美元，而2022年前9个月的总营收为103.73亿美元，主要是由于运费下降。

       在利润方面，2023年前9个月以星航运净亏损为25.41亿美元，而2022年前9个月的净利润为42.12亿美元。

       ZIM总裁兼首席执行官Eli Glickman表示:“ZIM第三季度业绩反映了当前的运营环境——运输需求依然疲软，运价持续恶化。鉴于对近期运价的负面展望，ZIM下调了全年业绩预测，预计2023年EBITDA为9亿至11亿美元，EBIT为亏损4亿至6亿美元。”
