Many shipping companies plan to cut costs!

After a decade of meagre profits, the world's top shipping companies posted a record net profit of $364 billion in 2021 and 2022, according to industry figures. However, analysts predict the global shipping industry to fall back into the red this year.

Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd Shipping Company, pointed out that he is full of worries about the shipping market in the next 24-36 months, and he believes that he will see the impact of economic recession.

AP Moller-MaerskA/S, the world'S largest listed container shipping company, is seen as typical. Last year, its free cash flow reached $27bn, but this year the industry thinks that figure will plummet by 80% and fall below positive in 2024.

In order to manage short-term capacity, carriers have begun to consider canceling individual voyages or completely suspending routes with weak demand.

In the longer term, shipping companies can also cut capacity by terminating charter parties, leaving ships idle or selling ships on the scrap market.
