Maersk plans to lay off 10,000 people due to imbalance between supply and demand in shipping market
On November 3rd, Maersk released its financial report for the third quarter of 2023. The financial report showed that the revenue in the third quarter was 12.13 billion US dollars, down 4.4% year-on-year, and the previous estimate was 12.54 billion US dollars. In the third quarter, EBIDTA was 1.88 billion US dollars, with an estimated 1.89 billion US dollars.
In addition, Maersk announced that it will lay off about 10,000 people to reduce costs, and Maersk expects to save 600 million US dollars through the cost reduction plan.
Since the beginning of this year, the decline in container freight rates and weakening demand have hit the global shipping industry, and the analysis predicts that this situation may last until 2026.
In the past two years, the freight rate of the shipping industry once peaked, and the loading rate of ships remained at a high level due to the obstruction of transportation capacity. However, with the gradual decline of freight rates in 2022, the prosperity of the industry turned sharply.
According to industry insiders, there is a serious imbalance between supply and demand in the global shipping market, and the global economy is still affected by high inflation, high interest rates and geopolitical conflicts. In addition, the destocking process is slow, and the shipping market will still face great challenges.
