Focus on logistics newsletter-Panama Canal reduces transit volume again!

The bid price is $2.85 million! Panama Canal reduces transit volume again!

Recently, the Panama Canal authorities have once again lowered the number of daily ships. In the most serious case, the daily ship traffic may be halved, and all sectors of the shipping industry may be affected.

According to the data, nearly 100 ships are waiting to pass through the Panama Canal, and the average waiting time for Panama-type super-large ships without reservation is 9-11 days. Analysis predicts that the new restrictions may aggravate ship congestion and have an impact on the global shipping industry.

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) said in a customer briefing that starting Nov. 1, daily ship traffic will be reduced to 31 ships. This will be followed by a step-by-step reduction pattern, which will be reduced to 25 ships per day on Nov. 3,24ships per day on Nov. 7,22ships per day on Dec. 1,20ships per day on Jan. 1, and only 18 ships per day from Feb. 1.Previously, the largest daily passage of the Panama Canal had reached 38-40 ships.

Some shipowners and charterers were eager to let their ships pass quickly, which pushed the auction price of transit seats to a new record. On October 30th, the bidding ended with a price as high as $2.85 million. The normal booking fee is about $900,000.
