Agreement reached! Freight transportation of St. Lawrence River in Canada resumes!

Vessels along the St. Lawrence River have resumed work, ending an eight-day strike after Unifor, a Canadian union, reached an agreement over a pay dispute with St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp.

About 360 workers of Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, went on strike in Ontario and Charming Beek over a wage dispute with St. Lawrence Waterway Management on Oct. 22.

This is the first time since 1968 that the strike has led to the closure of important shipping arteries.

The Maritime Chamber of Commerce estimates that the strike occurred during one of the busiest shipping periods of the year, resulting in a daily loss of up to 100 million Canadian dollars in economic activities in Canada and the United States.

Bruce Burrows, president of the Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement Sunday: "We are pleased that the important maritime traffic disruption has ended and we can once again focus on meeting the needs of consumers around the world."
