Long Beach Port: Throughput reached a new high, and retailers stocked more than expected!

The US port of Long Beach recorded its busiest month in September, thanks in large part to consumer demand for holiday-related goods at the end of the year. And data also showed,Southern California ports handled 829,429 20-foot TEUs in September, up 11.8% from the same period last year and 78,849 TEUs higher than the record set during the pandemic.

In September, the import volume was 408,926 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 19.3%; The export volume was 101,248 TEUs, down 10.3% year-on-year. Empty containers passing through ports increased by 11.5% year-on-year to 31,955 TEUs.

Mario Cordero, chief executive of Long Beach Port, said:"September was the first monthly year-on-year increase in cargo in 14 months, indicating that the import shortage may have ended and consumer confidence is rising. We expect freight volume to rebound moderately before the end of the year. Long Beach Port has signed a new cooperation agreement with port workers, and shippers can rely on our services.

The move follows a temporary labor agreement announced in June by the American West Wharf Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association. The union approved a six-year contract on August 31.
